European specialist stores for DIY and home improvement lead the global online markets

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic online marketplaces of DIY and home improvement stores experience massive growth in 2020. A recent report by ecommerceDB.com shows that most of the biggest players in DIY and home improvement are based in Europe. Seven of the top ten specialist stores in the world come from the UK and Germany.

Clearly ahead of its competitors, the UK-based store screwfix.com generated a net sales total of USD9165.8 million. With net sales twice as high as the second-placed US-based store harborfreight.com, the growth of screwfix.com increased by 21% year-on-year. However, this surge is no exception. All of the biggest DIY and home improvement online stores experienced double-digit growth in 2020. Among the European based online marketplaces, toolstation.com (UK) leads in growth with 39%, closely followed by diy.com (UK) with 38%.

Three of the top ten specialists for DIY and home improvement are from Germany. Growing by 32%, the fourth-placed Hornbach leads the German contenders generating a net sales total of USD342.7 million with its online store. In relation, obi.de experiences a slightly less prominent growth by 18% which nonetheless puts it in place sixth exceeding USD300 million in net sales. Increasing net sales by 15%, hagebau.de reaches USD175.9 million as tenth biggest global online DIY specialist.
